Lawrence Jakes, 90, of Decatur, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at his home.

A Celebration of Homegoing will take place 11 AM, Friday, July 7, 2017 at Newell Chapel 83313 M51, Decatur with Rev. Larry Herron officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the family in care of Monique Jones. Those wishing to sign Lawrence’s guestbook may do so at www.newellchapel.com.

Lawrence was born on January 28, 1927, in Glenmora, Louisiana, to Leon Shelton and Olgar Augustine Kyles. He worked as a truck driver for many years at LTV Steel Mill in Chicago before retirement. Lawrence was a people person, he knew no stranger and everyone loved him.

Lawrence is survived by his children, Joy Ruth Jakes Plummer of Omaha, Nebraska and Monique Jones of Decatur; ten grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister Rose McQueen of Houston, Texas and the Lessie Kyles, and the Kyles family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and former wives Annie Johnson and Rebecca Benjamin.
